Public Ad Campaign Project

October 25, 2009

On October 25th, 2009, I participated in an art project with 100 others artists all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, organized by the Public Ad Campaign. My location was N7th and Bedford. It was a visual protest against the NPA, the main culprit that posters our city in illegal advertising. The NPA caught wind of our project and sent out teams of wheatposter people into the city to cover all of the art made, in some cases immediately after the artist stepped away from their tableau. 7 artists were arrested, 2 were released after 5 hours because they couldn't be charged with anything and the other 5 had to spend the night in central booking. We have some high profile lawyers that are working pro-bono for us, and it looks like hopefully the aim was achieved, the NPA will have to appear in court along with the building department to explain why they have been cheating the City of New York out of millions of dollars in permits, and have pasted ugliness all over our city, inundating us with advertising. Walk by N7th and Bedford, there's a small chance the artwork is still up and hasn't had a Grand Theft Auto posters thrown on top of it yet.
